Teaching urban media

In September 2024 Eleonora Diamanti edited a special issue on Urban Media for Mediapolis, a journal on cities and culture.

The issue discusses designing the syllabus for her course “Urban Media” and introduces the essays produced by the students enrolled in her course in the Student Voices section.

An excerpt from the article:

“What is urban media? This is the question that opens the CMS/SOSC 327 Urban Media course, which is cross-listed between the Department of Communication and Media Studies and the Department of Psychological and Social Sciences at John Cabot University. “Urban Media” explores the entanglements between the processes of urbanization and mediation, without considering one an addition to the other. Rather, Kittler’s famous assertion “The City is a Medium” guided me in designing this course, which reflects many years of researching how the city mediates cultural expressions and how media infrastructure intermingles with urban life.”
